Ellis Island and Application for US Citzenship
Welcome to Manhattan, one of the five boroughs in the great New York City! The State of New York and the United States Government encourage you to apply for citizenship here in order to facilitate access to official residency, employment, and public services. Ellis Island was reopened on January 2, 2014 in response to the ongoing appearance of otherworldly visitors emerging from the nearby Hudson River.
Those seeking to naturalize to the United States will be required to fill out an immigration application and have their photo taken at the time of submission. Additionally, there will be a small clinic on-site to offer standard vaccinations for those who have not received mumps, measles, etc in their home worlds. Proctors are made available to those who are unable to read and/or write, however if your character does not speak or understand English there is a good chance a translator will not be available.
Your character will note that there are several questions specific to the United States. The test is made available online for study and review before being taken in person at Ellis Island. They are expected to have done enough research that they are loosely familiar with the country that is taking them in. Though this is an alternate universe, the basic history of the US is the same.
Once a character has applied for official immigration, it will take four weeks from the date their application is posted to receive approval. Upon receipt of approval characters will also receive a New York state identification card and a federal Social Security Number, both of which will serve as documentation of their naturalization to the United States.

- Please only post immigration applications to this page. OOC questions can be directed to our FAQ or emailed to the moderators at alteredstatesmods@gmail.com.
- Only characters who would successfully pass should apply to the immigrations thread. Otherwise, players are welcome to hand wave a denial or have your character choose not to apply at all.
- Characters may choose to be dishonest in response to one or more questions. This is permitted (though may or may not have future in-game consequences). Please put any untruthful response in italics as an OOC indicator to moderators who might not be familiar enough with your canon to separate fact from fiction.
- All Drifters that apply for citizenship are automatically registered as evolved, whether or not they know or choose to disclose their power on the application. As they arrived via the Hudson River it is a certainty they were effected, thus automatic registration.
- For any players uncertain of US specific questions, feel free to drop the moderators a line and we can provide assistance. Your character is expected to familiarize themselves if they want to naturalize but we don’t expect all our players to be from the United States and know all the answers offhand!
- Once Ellis Island issues citizenship, many employers and places of study welcome Drifters to apply. Admissions to universities and employment in normal lines of work can be threaded and/or hand waved without moderator input. For any complicated or major situations please contact the moderators at alteredstatesmods@gmail.com.
